38 Portland Place, London
Portland Place in London was designed and built between 1774 and 1776 by the renowned English architects Robert and James Adam as a wide thoroughfare with an uninterrupted view northwards towards Marylebone Park. The first owner of 38 Portland Place, Mr. John Hall, took up residence in 1777.
Later occupants were also men of substance, numbering amongst them a Lord Chief Justice, a general, a playwright and a physician. The house has retained much of its Adam splendour despite the changes that have occurred throughout Portland Place in this century. The original interior is graciously appointed, with ornamental moulded ceilings and cornices, and carved mantelpieces.
